Can we stop ageing?
Munich,
Stopping ageing? As your first blog post? Seriously?
Yes! In my first blog entry I will cover a topic that I am – for selfish reasons – most passionate about. Now before you think I’ve completely lost my mind and close this page, I’d like to ask you to take a minute and read through a few paragraphs – you won’t be disappointed.
From experience I know most people are rightfully skeptical when they hear something this unusual and seemingly impossible, however there have been recent breakthroughs in science & medicine that most people are unaware of and once you dive deep into the peer-reviewed scientific publications, you’ll hopefully change your mind.
Just to name a few examples: In 2013 Shinya Yamanaka was awarded the Nobel prize for discovering a mechanism through which we can transform mature cells to stem cells (essentially reverse ageing in human cells). We have also already discovered enzymes that protect our telomeres (part of chromosomes/DNA) from degrading and have understood our digestion process well enough to develop dietary suggestions that boost our lifespans by many years.
Of course, there is still a long way to go before we fully understand our immensely complex bodies, however I am optimistic that we are just generations away from significantly extending our lifespans. We’re humans after all, we were born to be bold, to reach for the stars and if history has taught us one thing, it is that we can overcome any challenge when we work together. Our potential is truly unlimited.
